Published Date: February 17, 2015

State Highway (SH) 289, known formost of its length as Preston Road, has become a primary north-southtravel route through Collin Countyserving as a critical link between NorthDallas communities, such as Plano andFrisco, and the fast growing NorthCollin County communities of Prosperand Celina. Without a doubt, SH 289has played a critical role in supportingthe growth and vitality of thecommunities and businesses that havegrown up alongside it.

Recognized as one of the primarycorridors contributing to CollinCounty’s exceptional growth - now the13th fastest growing county in thenation, growing by more than 61%between 2000 and 2009 to more than800,000 residents today; if currentlevels of growth continue, CollinCounty is expected to have nearly 1.3million residents by the year 2020.

This isn’t happening by accident. Fordecades federal, state, county, and cityofficials have worked together with theunderstanding that a healthytransportation system is necessary tosustain growth and serves as thefoundation for the many values thatcontribute to a healthy community’sgrowth and higher quality of life. NorthTexas leadership and transportationofficials understand that where we live, where we work, where we shop andwhere we play are all connected byroads and highways; and that ourquality of life is dependent on theability of people, goods, and services tomove quickly and cost effectivelybetween each.

However, high growth inevitablyleads to high congestion and anincreasing challenge to meet NorthTexas’ transportation needs – whichhas never been greater than it is today.Demand on our transportation systemcontinues to outpace available revenue.
